Welcome to Indie Insight, the weekly series where I interview an awesome indie nail polish maker! This week we are chatting with Carolina of Colores De Carol. Let’s get started!
How did you get into nail polish in the first place?
I always loved nail polishes and nail art and when I started blogging in 2010 I finally found a place for my passion.
When and why did you decide to start your own brand?
I started creating Colores de Carol polishes in January of 2013.
Tell me how and why you chose your brand name.
I decided to go with the same name as my blog for my polishes. Colores de Carol is Carol’s Colors in Spanish.
What is your favorite collection you’ve released so far?
I like every single collection I’ve created but the Winter/Holiday Collection for 2014 is definitely my favorite.
What is your favorite individual polish you’ve released so far?
50K without a doubt. I love that shade of blue and the iridescent glitter with the holographic effect made it very special.
What’s your favorite polish ‘season’?
I love summer polishes, the bright colors make me happy after our long cold winter.
Where do you draw your inspiration from for your polishes?
My inspiration comes from a lot of places, from movies, flowers, patterns, etc. I try to make cohesive collections depending on the inspiration.
Do you tend to keep your collections seasonal, or do you make what you want, when you want to make it?
Both. I try to make a collection for every season but if I come out with something I love, I’ll make it.
Are there any types of polish that you don’t make yourself but buy a lot of from others?
Yes, I don’t make thermal polishes and I buy them from other indie makers.
You’re a swatcher as well as an indie maker. Do you feel this gives you a unique perspective?
I feel it lets me work inside the industry as well as be an active part of it.
How many bottles do you own in your personal collection?
A lot! I stopped counting when I reached 3000 about two years ago. I’m planning on doing a huge de-stash and keeping at least a quarter of what I have right now.
Other than your own brand, which brand do you have the most of in your collection?
OPI, this was the first mainstream brand I started working with and I love them.
Do you do polish work full-time or do you also have a day job?
I have a bachelors degree in education but at this time I’m dedicated full time to Colores de Carol and being a stay at home mom.
What is your favorite thing about making or selling polish?
That I can create beautiful colors that people enjoy.
We all know glitter can be really messy and stick to everything- how do you keep all of your glitter, pigments and mixing tools organized?
I keep all of my glitters in drawers organized by colors. All of my mixing tools are stored on shelves in my (lab) nail room.
Tell me about your creating process- from first idea through to finished product.
I usually start mixing one shade and then I create others to compliment that, then I try to find a collection to fit in those polishes and the hardest part believe it or not is to name them.
How many prototypes do you typically have for every polish that actually makes it into a collection?
Usually about three or four.
The maker/blogger relationship is one that is pretty important in the indie world. How do you decide which bloggers to work with?
I like to work with honest bloggers, with those that can tell if you made a good or bad product so you can on work and fix the issues. I also look for bloggers/swatchers with high quality pictures that show my polishes well.
What was the moment that your brand really started to take off and be noticed? When you first started, what did you do to get your name out there?
When some of my collections began selling out I knew that I had something special on my hands.
What’s your favorite polish not made by you?
My all time favorite polish is Pacific Blue from Sally Hansen and for Indies has to be Oh Splat! By KBShimmer.
With so many indies on the market now, what do you think sets your brand apart?
I feel that I give all of my polishes a personal touch.
Let’s talk a little about the person behind the brand- what hobbies do you have outside of nail polish?
I love to read, and spend time with my family. We love to take long walks at the beach during summer time.
Do you have any pets? Tell me about them!
Yes, I have a dog called Polo, he’s a 9 years old Shih Tzu/Terrier mix
Is there anything about you that would surprise people to know?
I love playing The Sims 3. I don’t watch horror movies at all, I’m a big chicken.
What’s your favorite kind of food?
My favorite food is sushi, specially the shrimp tempura roll.
Thanks again for chatting with us, Carolina! Talk to me in the comments and let me know what you think of this brand- have you tried them out before? What other brands would you like to see interviewed in the future? Let me know!
