It’s always fun to see the start of a new indie brand from someone who has been around in the community for awhile, so when I heard that Mariah of Great Lakes Lacquer was starting a brand, I was definitely excited to see what she’d come up with and even more excited when she approached me about reviewing her very first collection!
The Great Lakes Lacquer Friends Collection, Part 1 consists of 5 shades total and will be released along with a set of limited edition polishes on July 12th (the LEs will be available only until the end of July) in her shop. The collection has a really neat inspiration- each shade was inspired by a personal friend of hers but also in a way that many of us can relate to the shades as well with our own friends or ourselves. I used Out The Door top coat for the photos below. Let’s take a look!
Great Lakes Lacquer The Quick-Witted Comedian is described as a light to medium teal green with loads of silver and green shimmer, purple/blue flake, and a slight touch of holographic pigment. Two coats. The formula was great, not too thick or thin. Oh my goodness- this is one of those rare shades that is prettier on the nail than it is in the bottle!! I immediately fell in love with this on the very first coat. Definitely one of the standouts in the collection. I color-edited the full hand swatch photos to get it as close as I could but I’d say it’s still a touch more green in person. I loved her descriptions for each of these shades so much I want to also include them in the post:
This friend is always punny (see, I can do it too). She’s always the first to come up with a twisted response or to shed some laughter on the mundane. She could probably do stand up if she really wanted to but things in life just haven’t rolled that way for her. Her sunny disposition makes you wonder if maybe the clouds don’t have silver linings after all. Did I mention she’s as curious as a cat? Maybe her nine lives are the reason she’s so happy.
Great Lakes Lacquer Krazzzzie Fast Fingered Gamer Girl is described as a turquoise that leans a bit green in the sun and more blue with indirect light with three types of purple shimmer. Two thin coats but this could easily be a one-coater if you use thicker coats. The formula was wonderful, it had a good consistency and was easy to apply. I also had to color-edit the full hand swatch of this one a little and I think I got it pretty close.
This lady is the one you want on your team when you go raiding on WoW or any other role playing game on the net. She’s also a good one to have by your side during nail polish restocks, cuz that girl can snatch anything. She’s also just the sweetest thing on earth (with a bit of attitude on the side) and just a bit shy. Did I mention pretty nails? Gosh yes. Luckily she can deliver the nail polish she enabled you on because she’s krazzie fast.
Great Lakes Lacquer The Fashion Artist is described as a medium blurple with a good dose of aqua shimmer that shifts to pink at times. Two coats. The formula was great, creamy with a good consistency and easy to apply. This shade is super unique in my collection and so gorgeous! I attempted to color-edit the swatches (blurples are notoriously difficult to capture) but could not get them even close so I just left the photos as they came out- this is much more purple and less blue in person. How it looks in the bottle shots (at the top of the entry) is much closer to how it looks in person- I took the shade photo in the exact same lighting but that one didn’t even come out right! Grrr, blurples. I love you but I hate you.
Let me tell you, this lady is an artist. And she uses her body as her canvas. From her hair, her nails, down to the clothes she wears. She’s one of those people that stalk all the Black Milk Clothing releases? Yeah, leggings are PANTS! And her hair? She does these crazy melts that look totally awesome and I wish I could rock. Besides that, she does mini Picasso’s on her nails. It’s insane the talent and creativity this lady has.
Great Lakes Lacquer The Triathlon Trainer is described as a deep blue leaning teal jelly jam packed with aqua, green, and gold shimmer with highlights of multichrome, color shifting flake. Three thin coats but you could get easily get away with two thicker ones. The formula was fantastic, not too thick or thin and easy to apply. This shade was 100% up my alley and easily my favorite- a must have! This is just a touch more green in person.
The athletic. She’s as active as you can get and sometimes, it annoys the crap out of you. Why can’t I have that kind of energy or drive? Haha. This lady runs and walks and runs some more. But her favorite is swimming. Her love of water really is apparent. Her scuba dives are awesome. She’s even swum with a Whale Shark. I’m eating my own heart out thinking about it.
Great Lakes Lacquer The Soul Sister is described as a bright and vivid red leaning salmon with a vibrant violet sheen and a bit of holographic goodness. Two thin coats but you could honestly get away with one thick coat. The formula was great, a little on the thin side compared to the others but not so much that it pools in your cuticles or anything, it’s quite easy to work with. Really flattering shade, I think!
She’s the one that you call your wife. She gets you. She’s the yin to your yang, the reason to your crazy, the calm to your chaos. She makes life better by just being her and you miss her all the time when she isn’t around. Her kids are your kids and vice versa. Even if life has separated you for awhile, that relationship is there, always there. Being the rock to my wave, I hope you all have one of these too.
Great Lakes Lacquer Big Lake is described as an orangey red with a golden yellow sheen and shimmer. Two coats. The formula was good, very similar to The Soul Sister. This is a typical red that will stain your cuticles during cleanup, so try to be as precise as possible when applying to avoid this. This is super luscious and flattering!
Vacation! Yup, this year we are going up to Big Lake to stay for a week with our best friends and our children. Much fishing, more swimming, grilling, and spending time with family and friends. The inspiration for this polish is the many sunsets and sunrises I plan on watching while there. The waterfront is a place where I am able to find and capture true serenity.
Overall, I am beyond impressed. Her bottle shape is unique but still easy to hold and easy to store. The colors are fantastic, unique and with a great formula. I highly recommend picking some of these up (The Triathlon Trainer & The Quick-Witted Comedian are my personal favs) and keeping an eye on this new brand. Again, if you’d like to pick up any of these shades for yourself you can do so in her shop starting July 12th!
What do you think of this collection? Which shade is your favorite? Let me know in the comments!
