L’oreal is a polish brand that I largely ignore- I own a few shades but they have never been my favorite and for the most part nothing really jumps out at me from them as must-haves. That recently changed with one of the shades from the new Dark Sides Of Grey Collection- Masked Affair!
L’oreal Masked Affair is a gorgeous silvery/light purple holographic polish. I used three coats for the below photos along with Out The Door top coat. The formula was alright- it had a bit of unevenness even with top coat and it did drag a bit on the first coat but it was fine with the other coats. For me, the formula is worth it, though- it is SERIOUSLY bling in the sun. It’s not as pretty in the shade but it’s definitely wearable. (Side note- I’ve been trying to do more ‘in the shade’ photos to show you guys how polish looks in every lighting scenario, when I can! When I have to swatch at night I can’t always do it but I’m trying!)
I have heard some talk about people thinking this shade was pretty but wanting to support indie brands instead- I figured it’d be interesting to do a comparison of Masked Affair and the two most similar indies I have in my collection- Serum No. 5 New You (2 coats) & Reverie Nail Lacquer Orchid (3 coats)! They actually all look pretty different on the nail, I think!
Overall, I really love this shade and I wish L’oreal would do more like this! 2014 was the year of the holos for indies and it’s nice to see mainstream brands finally catching up a bit! I hunted locally for this for a couple weeks and ended up having to pay someone to mail me a bottle- completely worth it, though. It seems like it’s popping up more and more locally lately, though, so you should hopefully find it pretty easily if you do want to grab it.
What do you think of this color? Have you picked it up yet? Planning to? Let me know in the comments!
