Sometimes people in the beauty community (whether that be professionals, bloggers, enthusiasts, etc) aren’t really appreciated. Outsiders sometimes look at it as a joke career choice or something shallow to spend so much of your time on. Even I sometimes get down on myself about putting so much time into this blog, telling myself is it really worth so many hours to talk about nail polish?
The answer is yes. Yes, it is. The #sharebeauty campaign & contest aims to inspire people into viewing beauty as a valued, creative career & something to aspire to. For this post, I was asked to share a story about how a beauty maker has influenced my life.
My grandmother passed away a couple of years ago at 92 years old. She lived in a very small town and always got her hair cut by the same stylist. She wasn’t really a fancy woman (although she did love her costume jewelry). As with a lot of people who pass away at such an old age, prior to getting sick at the end she was still very actively and spritely (going so far as to yell at the priest that he needed to get his act together when she didn’t like a homily of his, haha) and always made sure that her hair looked nice.
She lost a lot of weight right before she passed and her hair was not in great condition. The same stylist who’d done her hair for years actually came to the funeral home, cut and styled her hair & made sure she looked herself for the viewing.
It may sound like something small, but that’s really stuck with me since then, the importance that beauty has in our lives, and why it’s maybe not so shallow to have a career in the beauty community.
